Spring Lake Fishing

Spring Lake Fishing in Montana is the best time to catch large fish. The ice is off the lake and the fish are starting to cruse the shore line and quite visable. The best few days are just before they start to actually spawn. Floating lines work well because it is quite shallow. You will see fish in 1 to 3 feet of water. Sight fishing is very exciting and quite rewarding. The fish are usually quite agressive and most wet flies work well. Wooly Buggers, Shrimp, Damsels all work. The Water Strider is far better to fish from than wading the shore line. When you spot a pod of fish just row out about 50 feet and cast back into the shore for the best results. Vary your retreave untill you find the best motion. There is usually wind on the lake so a small anchor with a rope is usually need to hold your position. My anchor system is great because if you have to pull anchor you can just release it and the float marks the spot and you can come back to the same spot after you land the fish. A measure net is also a must. These fish are large and heavy and the measure nte allows you to be able to measure the lenght and remove the fly with out handling the fish. This time of the year the rivers are mostly high and it is still quite cold most days to give our great lakes a try.

Hi, Dave,
Several years ago I did some lake fishing in the Big Hole in my Waterstrider. You are absolutely right, there isn't a better way to fish a lake.
Cheers,
Ron in Tennessee
